New Asphalt Same Attitude

Hunter got a big surprise Friday night. Ashley from work had 2 extra Darlington tickets! He had been asking to go to the sold out race earlier this month. But now he had his big chance. Since it was Mother's Day weekend, Hunter chose me to take him to the race.

We parked in the crowded parking lot. Hunter and I looked for a marked so we could find our car again. We were on the same row as a RV flying 3 confederate flags. Normally seeing a confederate flag is so rare that it would be a great marker. But the fact that there were 3 flags helped us find the car. There were confederate flags flying everywhere!

My favorite part on the day was seeing John Schneider, Beauregard "Bo" Duke from the Dukes of Hazzard and the General Lee. This was my favorite TV show when I was in elementary school. I wanted to wait in the very long line to get my picture taken with John Schneider but Hunter who had never heard of the Dukes of Hazzard and would not wait in line. Since it would had taken at least an hour to get a picture with him, it was not worth listening to Hunter whine to get one.

Chris and I were trying to figure out how the Duke family could have some many cousins (Bo, Luke, Daisy, Coy, Vance, and lesser known Jeb Stuart) but none of them were brothers and sisters. Uncle Jesse would have had to have six brothers since all the cousins had the last name Duke. Unless Uncle Jesse had one or more sisters who married men with the surname "Duke" (a situation not out of the realm of possibility). :)

Start of the race

Our seats were located at turn 1. We were glad to have two of the 60,000 tickets that were sold. Hunter loved the race. He listened to the drivers on the radio talking to their pit crew. The race started at 7:20 and end around 11:15. He never left his seat and watched the whole race!

The drivers raced around the race 367 times. The average speed of tonights winner was 140 mph. I bet they have trouble driving the speed limit.

Pit stop

I liked watching the pit stops. Boy, do they move fast!

The sunset slowly set but there was nothing was slow about the race.

Kyle Busch won the race. At 23, he is the youngest winner in Darlington Raceway history.

I'm glad Hunter wanted to go with me. I was nice spending time alone with him. Well, as alone as you can get surrounded by 60,000 screaming fans.

We were able to find the 3 confederate flags that led the way to our car. We got home around 2:30 am. I asked Hunter want he liked best about the race. He said EVERYTHING!!
